Key Stage 3 Information

Year 7

In Year 7, students complete two projects.  The first project will introduce them to basic skills that are essential for designing and working with resistant materials. The second project will further increase the confidence and level of skill through a design and create a small wooden storage unit with a sliding lid and plastic formed tray insert.

Year 8

In Year 8, students will complete one design and make a project based body adornment (Bling) which will introduce them to the process of casting, shaping and finishing metals. This project uses pewter and the study of this and other materials helps students to begin to understand the varying properties of different materials and how to select materials for products  based on their properties.

Year 9

Students will design and make a  LED lamp created using CAD and the laser cutter.  This introduces students to a variety of skills and machinery in particular the students will gain experience with using modern technology to produce a quality product.

Key Stage 4 Information

Years 10 and 11

In Year 10, students complete the Non Examination assessment that accounts for 50 % of the GCSE. Students will use a wide range of products and prototypes and have access to a good range of materials and techniques. The title for the Non examination assessment is set by the exam board, Students spend two terms working on their prototype product and accompanying portfolio

There is a written exam at the end of Year 11, in which students are able to show their detailed knowledge of Resistant Materials. A significant proportion of the exam content is taught in a very practical manner allowing students to experience the content rather than learn about materials and techniques from a book.
