Introduction to the Department
In the Design and Technology Department, we believe that our students need to be prepared to enter a world that is constantly changing, and increasingly facing a range of economic, ecological, and humanitarian challenges. Our students are also preparing for a world in which the jobs they enter and the technology that they will use has not yet been invented. To do this, we aim to equip students to be lifelong learners through developing thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the social skills required to work collaboratively or independently: resilience; curiosity; hard work and independence.
Students will develop this by:
- Work with real life situations and contexts to serve real life problems.
- Empathise with others and see things from other perspectives than their own.
- Be aware of and be encouraged to learn about our environment and how we can sustain it.
In addition, we are the practical subject we have always been, and endeavour to produce students who can produce well-made projects, with accuracy and pride, and leave us with high standards of practical ability.
Ultimately, our curriculum is aimed at developing a well-rounded student who can think, problem solve and create. These skills and attitudes will enable them to be Christ to all and use their talents for the betterment of our world.
Key Stage 3 Information
Year 7
In Year 7, students will have one Design Technology teacher and rotate around the four different disciplines (Food Preparation and Nutrition, Resistant Materials, Graphics and Textiles). Students develop a really sound basis for both practical skills and knowledge to equip them well for further study. Students will design and make a range of products which they then take home to be used or eaten by their family.
Years 8 and 9
Students in these year groups complete nine weeks (13 hours) of study in each of the four discipline areas - Food Preparation and Nutrition, Textiles, Graphics and Resistant Materials where they are able to further develop their skills and knowledge. Products are increasingly more complex and sophisticated as the students progress.
Key Stage 4 Information
In Years 10 and 11, the Design Technology Department offers three GCSE choices:
- AQA Food Preparation and Nutrition
- AQA Design Technology - students specialise in one material area (Product design, using wood, metals and plastics but specialising in one. Or Product Design with architecture, focussing on paper and board materials).
- AQA Fashion and Textiles (Art & Design Specification).
